Regarding Bose: a lot of their earlier speakers had a direct/reflecting sound path to them, even the bookshelf 301s which had a "vane" that you could point wherever you wanted. If it's not too expensive of a cartridge, don't guess anymore: either buy a replacement stylus for it (which probably won't be too expensive), or just get an entire new cartridge (a bit more, but you can still get decent carts that don't break the bank). Most likely for that AT cartridge, a force between 1.5 and 2 would be correct. Just be sure to unplug it and let it sit overnight before poking around in there.įor the turntable, "2" is the tracking weight in grams. That might knock some of the crud out of that control for the time being, until you can hit it properly with some deoxidizer/cleaner. Temporarily, power the receiver down and turn that selector knob a couple dozen times back and forth. The wires connect to the back of this switch, and you may find an open spot on the side of it where you can squirt in some cleaner. Wuf: to clean that control, you'll probably need to remove the cover, since the "guts" of it are behind the front panel. (Fellow z, please forgive the duplicate post) In which case you wouldn't be pondering these posts right now.īut I wanted to say thanks to all Forum members for helping me get moving in the right direction after a long period of stagnation, regarding all things audio. had I not accidentally happened upon the SH Music Forums and discovered my inner bonehood. conical? And what about cleaning the stylus?īTW - I probably would not have gotten a stereo for another 15 yrs. So I'm not sure how heavy the tone-arm should be (right now I have it set on just under "2" – I honestly don't know what that means, but it sort of felt right – but I know that some types of needle should be played at a heavier setting than others – doesn't that have something to do with spherical vs. Is it worth getting this fixed?ģ) I need to get some speaker wire – right now, I'm using makeshift speaker wire made from extension cords (the ends are cut to expose the wire) – the cords are short, so the speakers are placed too close together.Ĥ) I'm not sure what kind of cartridge or stylus I'm using (and I'm not positive it's really in good shape). Scott – no model number (these are kinda small)Į) BOSE - I think these are the first ones they made that are shaped weird and you point them at the wall - no model number visibleĪnybody know anything about these? The Kenwood speakers are probably OK - I have absolutely no idea what kind of condition any of the others are in.Ī fellow suggested I post these questions here for feedback:ġ) My records aren't all in great shape, although they seem to have survived two cross-country trips and many years of storage.Ī) they were sometimes played on a crappy stereo with an old needleī) they need to be cleaned – so I need to know the best way to do this – is there a record cleaner or vacuum that's good but not outrageously expensive?Ģ) The receiver sounds nice, I think, but it is old, and I noticed that when adjusting the "selector" knob (to choose between Phono, Aux, FM, AM) that there's crackly static, and that it's hard to get it set just right for FM (it's faint until it's in the right place, then it comes in POW). I have several other speakers which I'll try out to see how they sound in comparison to the Criterions:ī) AR 3a – on the back, instead of a + and – hookup, there are three connections, labeled 1, 2 and T – and there's a bit of wire connecting the 2 and the T hookups – what do these mean?Ĭ) Wharfedale – no model number (these are kinda huge)ĭ) H. I hooked these up and they sound OK! I need to have the cartridge looked at to be sure the stylus is really OK, and the receiver could use a little work (some crackly static when I adjust the "selector" knob to FM) but all in all not too bad. Sherwood S-7100A Receiver (probably early 70's) ($30)Ī pair of Criterion'77 speakers (3-way, small cabinets) ($50) Pioneer turntable (PL 514XD - belt drive) looks to be mid-seventies, has an Audio-Technica cartridge, not sure what type it is. I haven't hooked up the rest yet (if the KC-206 is a pre-amp, then I'll still need a power amp) - but I did pick up some other used stuff at a couple of yard sales: Kenwood stereo control amplifier kc 208 update#Update on the stereo - the CD player is jamming when I load a CD, so it's outta the picture for the moment (any suggestions on a quick fix? - I think the carriage that supports the CD was supposed to be anchored by transportation screws which weren't included ) ![]()
